Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis due to cholesterol atheroembolic disease: Clinicopathologic correlations
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:422 1995

The authors retrospectively reviewed 25 renal biopsies. Nine of them were performed for evaluation of proteinuria, four for progressive renal failure mimicking RPGN and 12 had typical features of atheroembolic renal disease. All patients had cholesterol clefts and most had changes consistent with ischemia. 24% of patients (6) had FSGS, all with significant proteinuria. The authors conclude that proteinuria specifically with FSGS is a previously undescribed form of glomerular involvement with atheroembolic disease and may represent hyperfiltration injury. (Krane)
