Use of a 1.1% amino acid dialysis solution to treat malnutrition in peritoneal dialysis patients

This abstract describes a randomized prospective 3-month trial comparing standard PD solution to 1.1% amino acid solution and involves 105 patients. The authors find that patients with serum albumin levels in the lowest tertile show significant benefit from the amino acids as compared with those treated with standard solutions. Analagous benefits are not seen in the other tertiles. However, patients in the highest tertile do show significant improvements in mid-arm muscle circumference. The authors conclude that IP amino acids are safe and provide nutritional benefit. A criticism might be that the clinical significance of these improvements is unclear. There is a need to show that this sort of nutritional treatment improves long-term outcomes in PD patients. (Blake)
