Serum phosphorus strongly correlates with PTH in mild
chronic renal failure

This study supports recent findings that phosphate may play a
direct role in turning on PTH. In mild renal disease, these authors
report that PTH rises in association with phosphate, before 1,25 D levels
are reduced, suggesting that phosphate may play an important early role
in this process. This lends further support for the idea of controlling
phosphate very early in the azotemic patient.
