Relationship between blood volume and inferior cava diameter during and after short and long hemodialysis

J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:604 1995

The study measured blood volume and inferior vena caval (IVC) diameter during and after a 3 hr dialysis session and during and after a 6 hr dialysis session. BV was measured by an optical hematocrit method and IVC diameter by ultrasound. In the 3-hour sessions, an acceleration in the fall in BV was seen during the last hour. There was also a rapid rebound in BV during the 2 hours after dialysis. The rebound in BV was larger after 3 hr dialysis sessions than after 6 hr sessions. The changes in IVC diameter were similar after the 3 and 6 hr dialyses.

Comment: The study is interesting in that it documents a large rebound in BV after "short" dialysis. Because the same amount of fluid was removed during the 3 and 6 hr sessions by design, it is not surprising that IVC measurements were not different 2 hr after the two different dialysis sessions.
