Smoking -- a major predictor of nephropathy in newly diagnosed type II diabetes
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:451 1995

In this study renal function, microalbuminuria, and HbA1 excretion was measured in 92 newly-diagnosed patients with type II diabetes. By multivariate analysis, current smoking, but not past smoking, was the single most-important predictor of an elevated urinary albumin excretion (UAE), with a relative risk of 7.0! The degree of glycemic control was far less important, with an odds ratio of only 2.0. No relation between UAE and current blood pressure was found. These findings suggest that smoking may be of very great importance in leading to progression of renal disease in type II diabetes. (Daugirdas)
