Renal mass and blood pressure in normal children
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:643 1995

Reduced nephron number might predispose to hypertension. Lane et al., tested this hypothesis in a group of 257 children who underwent kidney echotomography for UTI or microscopic hematuria and showed no anatomical alterations. In contrast with the hypothesis, kidney length (corrected for height) was directly, rather than inversely, related with arterial pressure. The weakness of this study is that the study group is composed by a selected group of children (with suspected renal disease) and that renal length may be a poor indicator of nephron number.
