Blood recirculation in central temporary catheters for
acute hemodialysis
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract)
(Nov) 6:496 1995
The authors studied recirculation (R) in temporary venous
catheters at a blood flow of 300 ml/min, and found that R was
minimal (mean 4%) in subclavian catheters, but substantial in
femoral catheters (mean 16%). It was higher in short (13.5 cm)
femoral catheters (23%) than in longer (19.5 cm) femoral
catheters (13%).
Comment:
The high incidence of recirculation must
be taken into account, esp. when treating intoxications or in
other situations where high dialysis efficiency is a priority.
