Trends in the incidence of hepatitis C infection in
hemodialysis units

This questionnaire-based study investigates the trends in the
prevalence and incidence of HCV infection in the 71 HD units in Portugal from
1991 to 1993, i.e. after the institution of routine anti-HCV testing of
blood products. The authors found a decreasing incidence of HCV infection
from 9.9% in 1991 to 5.1% in 1993. They also found that as the prevalence
increased across units (from less than 19% to more than 60%), the incidence
also increased
(from 2.5% with less than 19% prevalence to 35.3% with greater than 60%
prevalence), thereby
strongly suggesting a transmission of HCV infection in the dialysis units.
While there were no differences between urban and rural populations, there
were geographical variations in the prevalences as also the type of ownership
of the units (higher in public than in private).
