In kidney transplanted patients developing graft renal artery stenosis erythrosis appears before blood pressure increases

J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:1104 1995

In a retrospective study of 15 transplant recipients who developed renal artery stenosis, erythrocytosis was found to be an early indicator. Patients were evaluated by routine renal Doppler ultrasound every 6 months and clinical examination every 3 months. Hypertension was not noted at quarterly determinations prior to ultrasound identification of renal artery stenosis, whereas Hct was increased 3 months before blood pressure was elevated. Because data was not given for patients without renal artery stenosis, the positive predictive value of erythrocytosis is not known. Three patients who were on ACE inhibitors also had erythrocytosis and a rise in creatinine 3 months prior to recognition of renal artery stenosis. (Paller)
