Mild osteodystrophy: Is it really a mild disease?
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract)
(Nov) 6:938 1995
The authors look at 45 dialysis patients with mild bone lesions (normal bone
formation rates) with
and without histological evidence of Al intoxication. The Al intoxicated
patients had a higher
prevalence of bone pain, myopathy, fractures, and hypercalcemia. Al
intoxicated patients with
normal bone formation rates are at risk for significant morbidity.
Clinically, mild lesions should
be divided into those with and without evidence of Al overload.
Comment: The 259 patients biopsied about 6 years ago are still
providing useful
information about renal osteodystrophy.
