Glomerular structure in long term type II diabetes with and without microalbuminuria

J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:454 1995

This study attempted to establish an anatomical link between microalbuminuria in diabetes as found in Pima Indians and structural changes in the kidney, notably mesangial cell volume, glomerular BM thickness, and the number of epithelial cells per glomerulus. It was found that, in patients with diabetes for more than 8 years, all of the structural abnormalities were accentuated relative to those found in patients with diabetes less than 5 years. However, there was no difference with and without microalbuminuria. Thus, a structural change associated with the appearance of microalbuminuria was not identifiable. (Daugirdas)
