Beta-2-microglobulin amyloidosis involving the GI tract in hemodialysis
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:558 1995

Six hemodialysis patients with deposits of beta-2 amyloid in the GI tract are described. Presenting clinical findings included acute abdomen, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, intractable vomiting, and severe hemorrhage. The mean duration of dialysis in these patients was 16 years, ranging from 7 to 20 years. All six had shoulder pain, 5/6 had carpal tunnel syndrome.

Comment: As dialysis patients survive for extended periods, amyloid involvement may become a substantial cause of morbidity. (Daugirdas)
