In vivo effect of intravenous 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 on interleukin-2 production in hemodialysis patients

The investigators studied the in vivo and in vitro effects of calcitriol on the lymphocytic production of IL-2 and IL-2 receptors in patients on hemodialysis. Incubating lymphocytes with calcitriol decreased the production of both. Three months of Rx with IV 1 ug after each dialysis calcitriol also decreased the production of both. The in vivo experiments are contrary to that previously described in patients receiving oral calcitriol. The authors ascribe the difference to the higher levels of calcitriol achieved with the intravenous route. (Delmez)
