Low birth weight a risk factor for development of diabetic nephropathy?

J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:454 1995

In a case-control study, the study investigated 184 IDDM patients with diabetic nephropathy (mean duration of diabetes 27 years) and 182 normoalbuminuric IDDM patients (mean duration of diabetes 26 years) including their birth weight from midwives' original registrations. In women below the 10th percentile birth weight, 75% had nephropathy compared to 35% in women above the 90th percentile. The prevalences of nephropathy in men in both groups were similar at about 50 %. Adult height significantly correlated with birth weight. Men with diabetic nephropathy were significantly shorter than men with normoalbuminuria. The study supports the hypothesis that genetic predisposition or factors operating in utero or early childhood or both, contribute to the development of diabetic nephropathy. (Khanna)
