J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:1113 1995

In this study, the authors evaluate the liver histology in 31 long-term (mean of 160 +/- 37 months follow-up) HCV infected renal transplant recipients. They found that 58% patients had chronic increase in liver enzymes, and in majority (78%) of these, chronic active hepatitis (CAH) was found on liver histology. Interestingly, 54% of those with normal liver enzymes also had CAH, emphasizing the fact that serious liver disease can exist despite normal liver enzymes. Further, this study highlights the fact that serious liver disease is present in two-thirds of the HCV infected transplant recipients 10 years after the infection. (Bhamidipati/Pereira)
