Early death in dialysis patients: risk factors and impact on incidence and mortality rates
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:563 1995

In the USRDS database, initial 90-day mortality is not counted. In this study of 15,000 plus patients from the southeastern USA, it was found that 6% of all new patients died within 90 days of initiating dialysis therapy. Exclusion of these early deaths reduced the ESRD incidence rates by 4-9%, and first year age- adjusted mortality rates were underestimated by 26-30%. Early deaths were more frequent among the elderly, white patients, males, malnourished patients, patients with congestive heart failure, or with a history of myocardial infarction, depression, or cancer.
