Secondary hyperparathyroidism complicated by parathyromatosis
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:971 1995

The course of 11 patients who developed parathyromatosis after parathyroidectomy is described. Parathyromatosis is a condition characterized by numerous functioning parathyroid nodules scattered throughout the neck and mediastinum. All of these patients had severe renal osteodystrophy and they complained of severe bone and joint pain and severe itching. PTH levels were generally 10-fold higher than normal. Of the 11 patients 7 died and 3 were considering termination of dialysis because of severe pain, fractures, and itching.

Comment: This paper highlights a poorly understood and documented complication of parathyroid surgery. (Daugirdas)
