hepatitis C virus

A group of 14 HIV positive patients were studied 12 of whom were hepatitis
C antibody positive, one was negative and one not tested. They all
presented with a clinical syndrome of high BP, edema, hematuria and low C3
(9 of 13 tested); cryoglobulins were present in 5 of 8. Renal biopsy
showed membranoproliferative GN in 6, mesangial proliferative GN in 6,
membranous nephropathy in 1 and glomerular sclerosis with mesangial immune
deposits in 1. HCV RNA was detected in 7 of 11 patients; 4 of 5
cryoglobulinemic patients had HCV RNA in renal tissue. The authors
conclude that HIV patients coinfected with HCV may exhibit a distinct
clinicopathological condition from HIV associated nephropathy.
