Mutation at Arg506 of coagulation factor V and access
thrombosis in hemodialysis patients

This was a study crying out to be done. It is known that 5% of
non-uremics have a factor V mutation (Leiden) causing activated
protein C resistance and thrombotic tendency. Are such patients
overrepresented among those with frequent access thrombosis? The
authors screened a cohort of 152 dialysis patients with PCR and
found 7 heterozygous carriers with the mutation. None of these,
however, had any unusual problems regarding thrombosis of any
kind, nor were family histories positive.
