Vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism and severity of secondary hyperparathyroidism

J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:972 1995

The influence of VDR receptor polymorphism (bb,Bb,BB) on serum PTH levels was examined. 354 HD patients treated with CaCO3 and calcitriol if PTH greater than 3x the upper limits of normal were studied. The occurrence of allelic variation was equal between 105 healthy subjects and the study population. There was no association between allelic type and PTH>10 ng/ml or <10 ng/ml although there was a borderline association with Bb and PTH greater than 10 ng/ml in those on dialysis less than 5 years (P=0.054). It was concluded that non-genetic factors are more important than VDR receptor subtype in the genesis of hyperparathyroidism.

Comment: A linear regression analysis encompassing Ca, P etc. would add to the abstract. (Delmez)
