Access-related infection in HIV-seropositive dialysis
patients: comparison of hemodialysis to peritoneal dialysis

Hemodialysis vascular access and peritoneal dialysis catheter related
infections were reported for HIV positive patients at Johns Hopkins. The
two groups of patients were of similar age and had similar CD4 counts.
Hemodialysis patients had statistically more access infections (2.27/yr vs
1.14/yr) and more access related admissions (4.7/yr vs. 0.76). The authors
conclude that HIV positive dialysis patients have more access related
complications if they are on hemodialysis than if they are treated with PD.
These data add to our knowledge that HIV positive hemodialysis and PD
patients clearly have more access related infections than non-HIV positive
patients.
