Cyclosporine A-induced salt sensitive hypertension: role of nitric oxide
Am Soc Nephrol
J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:673 1995

Cyclosporine causes a sodium-sensitive hypertension in the majority of patients given the drug. Rats with impaired nitric oxide synthesis also develop sodium-sensitivity of blood pressure. These investigators sought to determine whether there was a link between these phenomena. Rats were given cyclosporine for two weeks which did not affect blood pressure. During a third week of cyclosporine administration rats also fed a high salt diet became hypertensive, associated with a decrease in serum and urine nitric oxide metabolites. They conclude that cyclosporine impairs nitric oxide synthesis, thus causing sodium-dependent hypertension. (Paller)
