CAPD using a self-made, ultrafiltration-sterilized, bicarbonate- based solution

J Am Soc Nephrol (abstract) (Nov) 6:515 1995

The investigators sterilized a peritoneal dialysis solution containing 33 mM bicarbonate by using a Multipurpose System 10 machine (CGH Medical). This machine ultrafilters through four highly permeable polysulfone dialyzers. The final product was stored aseptically in plastic bags of a Y-system for CAPD. At pH 7.0 this solution was sterile and endotoxin free. They determined that the pH of this stored solution was stable for 3 weeks. Six CAPD patients underwent dialysis using above described solution for a week with no complication. No peritonitis was observed in any patients during the study. No bichemical alterations were observed during the study period. The study demonstrated the feasibility of a simple and low cost method of preparing bicarbonate based dialysis solution for CAPD.
